MISE-EN-SCENE IN MUSIC MAGAZINES

There are different features of mise-en-scene used in this magazine cover. For example the the models costume is trendy and fits in with he whole style and theme that is portrayed. The setting/background is a plain and simple, this is a good reflection of the magazine as it isn't overbearing. It doesn't over power and distract you from the writing on the cover and has a nice natural blend with the style.

The lighting is balanced and does not make the writing or images used difficult to see. The font used is big and bold which makes it eye-catching for the audience to read. The clear texts make it easier for the readers to understand the whole theme of the magazine and what its about.

The mode of address for this image is direct and at a mid shot. This is effective as it instantly draws you in and grabs your attention and suits the cover. Also the styling of the magazine cover makes it clear who the selected target demographic is and instantly attracts them to read.

The anchorage "I'm bigger, better" fixes and relates to the meaning of the picture. Where in the image the model is bold and quite confident similarly to the caption. The enigma "want to be the next one claiming the crown?" is a question that is not immediately answered which creates interest for the audience.

The mise-en-scence in this cover has a variety of features, everything in this single frame helps the audience to decode whats going on. The mode of address is direct, it speaks to the audience in order to communicate. The image suits its intended audience and target demographic and lures them in.

The lighting used is quite dark as you can see shadows across the models face. Doing this is effective as it fits in with the whole idea of 'rap' as that is what the genre of the magazine is. He looks quite angry which reflects the whole image of the rap scene as it is usually seen as angry young men.

The setting of the cover has been added in, its of graffiti which again fits in with the whole rap genre. However the background looks quite over powering as you are more drawn into the background instead of the text on the cover

The anchorage "who would be the best" again like the cover above relates to the image as it uses non verbal communication as he is pointing at the audience as almost to ask them a question without using speech,  the enigma also makes the readers more intrigued to find out more.

  1. Well done, Anisa; highly proficient and in places execllent. You are clearly becomming deft with key media production concepts such as mise-en-scene, genre, lighting, anchorage, demographic etc., weaving these into your writing very effectively.

    Targets:
    - be specific and use media terms where appropriate, rather than making what are rather general comments such as "the effect is not overbearing". By the same token, avoid adjectives like 'nice' and 'eye-catching' which are not very analytical. Again, be specific and, accordingly, consider terms like 'clear', 'effective', 'prominent'.
    - be sure to explain key points made. for example, why does the 'the styling of the magazine cover make it clear who the selected target demographic is and instantly attract them to read'?
